Afghan Government To Apply Blockchain Technology In Health Sector
November 28, 2019

Afghan’s health ministry has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with blockchain firm FantomOperations to integrate blockchain technology into Afghan’s healthcare sector.

On Nov. 27, Afghan Voice Agency reported that the country would apply blockchain to identify counterfeit medicines, create medical registries in hospitals and digitize patients’ files.

Integrating Blockchain To Fight Counterfeit Pharmaceuticals In The Country

Afghan Public Health Minister, Ferozuddin Feroz commented on the initiative:

“The Ministry of Public Health is committed for the institutionalization of electronic government in the health sector and the blockchain technology would help the ministry bring transparency, acceleration and effectiveness in the related affairs.”

According to an April report from the European Asylum Support Office, many Afghani citizens resort to traditional medicines due to its accessibility and inexpensiveness. There is a huge concern about the volume of counterfeit pharmaceuticals in the country. The report reads:

“The Medicine Importers Union stated that at least 40% of medicine and medical equipment enter the Afghan market illegally and many of the pharmaceutical products are low quality.”

The United Nations have begun working on the solutions for blockchain for sustainable urban development in Afghanistan. UN is reportedly working on developing blockchain solutions for land records and services transparency as part of the UN’s “City for All” initiative.
