The Human Rights Foundation has partnered with Casa to help global activists protect their crypto funds in its fight against human rights abuses and authoritarianism.

The Human Rights Foundation or HRF is a global organization that promotes democracy and freedom through its use of cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin in battling human rights.

Casa is a crypto custody startup and will now be working closely with the HRF to educate NGOs, and activists about Bitcoin

On July 15 Casa announced in its official blog post stating its participation in HRF workshops and providing its expertise in Bitcoin security to global activists.

NGOs and activists often find difficulties in accessing services from the likes of traditional banks. The partnership intends to address the financial difficulties faced by societies under authoritative regimes.

Casa and HRF aims to help activists raise funds in secured way through its promotion on using cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin.

Alex Gladstein, Chief Strategy Officer at the HRF, views that Bitcoin has enormous potential in activism. Storing crypto funds in a safe way has always been a major challenge, according to Gladstein.

Casa is, therefore, expected to expand its expertise in protecting crypto funds for the likes of NGOs such as indie media, environmental groups, political activists, and other kinds of movements.

Alex Gladstein adds:

“With software like Casa, organizations can keep their bitcoin secure while maintaining full control, without the risk of losing funds due to a mistake. It’s critical that activists control the private keys to their bitcoin, so they can always get their funds to where it’s needed, when it’s needed.”

Nick NeumanCEO at Casa, expressed that Bitcoin provides significantly more freedom for moving funds around the world and, since it’s not subject to the fees and friction of international transfers, more money is available more quickly to fund projects that make a real difference.

“Sadly, human rights organizations face unique challenges when it comes to managing their funds, including having their bank accounts frozen. But this can happen to any charity, as we saw in 2019 when HSBC froze the account of Hong Kong pro-democracy group Spark Alliance due to political pressure.”

– said Nick NeumanCEO at Casa

According to Neuman, Bitcoin changes the game as long as it is protected within a highly secure self-custody solution. Bitcoin enables activists to receive and spend funds in a way that governments and corporations can’t control.

In June 2020, HRF introduced its own Bitcoin Development Fund, a privacy-focused project to support developers in making Bitcoin as a safer asset for activists and journalists over the world.

As of June 23, the fund had received nearly $30,000 in donations from 22 donors.
