Reddit Airdrops Free Polygon Blockchain NFTs To Its Most Loyal Users

Reddit, the social media and community app, has airdropped free Polygon blockchain nonfungible tokens (NFTs) to its most loyal users. They launched the ‘Collectible Avatars’ last month, and also sell them to those who don’t qualify for the airdrop.

It has been reported that this move comes in a series of Reddit getting further into the blockchain, crypto, and NFT spaces. The community platform announced on the server: r/CollectibleAvatars that they’d be airdropping collectible avatars to their top community builders, for free.

However, the post was published two weeks ago, and they’ve been rolling them out since then. They also mentioned that there are 4 different styles of Collectible Avatars which qualified users could choose from. To clarify, for users to qualify, they must have hit a minimum amount of ‘Karma’. On Reddit, karma is a reflection of how much your contribution means to the community.

The report said that users can earn karma in a few ways: posting, commenting, and giving/receiving awards. People in the Reddit community often joke about Karma being “fake internet points”, but Reddit has gone out of its way to find utility for it, through this Reddit NFT airdrop.

Likewise, users will have already been notified if they qualified for the Reddit airdrop, but the amount of Karma required was unconfirmed at the time of the announcement. Currently, the Polygon-based NFTs are now on OpenSea. The floor price of the 16,000 items sits at 0.012 ETH.

Reddit has been a big backer of NFTs for some time now. Previously, there were rumours around a new NFT marketplace on Reddit, and they tested NFT PFPs on the platform, too. More recently, this June, the company partnered with Gary Vaynerchuk’s VaynerNFT to publish ‘The ABCs of NFTs Playbook’, a recourse guiding new users into NFTs.

The r/NFT community on the platform has 490,000 members, so the popularity of NFTs for Reddit users is clear. Polygon has zero gas fees for the creation of NFTs, with similar utilities to minting on Ethereum. They work perfectly for the airdrop of lots of NFTs, or giveaways. Many projects have used the blockchain for similar kinds of drops, including Cool Cats which hosted a Halloween giveaway to anyone who entered a costume competition.

Thus, projects who expect large amounts of small transactions to happen with their NFTs will often turn to Polygon for their needs. An example of this is The Sandbox, whose in-game assets run solely on Polygon.
