UAE’s Ministry of Community Development (MOCD) to host a competition for developing blockchain-based software for the social sector.
The event “Social Blockathon” announced by MOCD will have a total prize fund of $16,300 to encourage the development of blockchain-based apps for educational, social and recreational purposes.
Blockchain For Awareness and Social Care
The country’s official news agency, Emirates News Agency reported the news on Oct. 6 while stating that contest submissions are open till Feb. 20, 2020. The contest announcement was made during GITEX Technology Week held at the Dubai World Trade Center from Oct. 6 to Oct. 10.
Programmers, graphic and interface designers are invited to compete in developing blockchain software in the areas of awareness and social care.
The contestant will be awarded in UAE’s fiat currency, dirham (AED). The winners will be announced during UAE Innovation Month in February 2020 granting prize money of:-
First-place winner- 30,000 AED ($8,200)
Second place winner- 20,000 AED ($5,400)
Third Place winner- 10,000 AED ($2,700)
The ‘Social Blockathon’ event the participants will be challenged to develop blockchain-enabled apps within a limited period of time and will not be allowed to use pre-designed software and applications, the report notes.
The department of MOCD develops and implements social policies and legislation for the UAE while overseeing social welfare institutions in the Emirates.
UAE Embraces Blockchain

The Department of Urban Planning and Municipalities (DPM), a UAE government land registry entity and Indian IT firm Tech Mahindra announced a partnership to launch a blockchain solution for land registry.
The Department of Economic Development in Dubai recently announced its move to a blockchain-based Unified Business Registry Platform (UBRP).
